Most classes teach cursive in three steps. Start with the lowercase letters, a few at a time, grouped by the stroke they begin with. Move on to short words that join those letters, such as this week's spelling list. Finish with sentences, where students practice the joins between words and keep their slant even across the line.
Alphabet for letters or pairs like Aa Bb, or Words & Sentences for a word or a sentence on each line.
Dotted, outline or faded letters; 3-line or 4-line paper; and a letter size from XL to XS. Cursive is already chosen.
Print or save as PDF on Letter or A4, or download a Word file with the cursive font inside. A blank row after each line gives room to write it alone.
Teach lowercase before capitals: most cursive capitals are used only at the start of a word. Practice letters that share a starting stroke together, like c, a, d, g, o and q, which all begin with the same curve. Use 4-line paper at first so tails on g, j, y and z have a line to reach, then move to 3-line paper. A few minutes every day helps more than one long session a week.
Letters are drawn from Playwrite US Trad, a joined script in the traditional style taught in American schools, so the letters connect the way students learn them. Each one sits on the baseline and reaches the dashed midline.
