Letter Tracing Worksheets

Print a page for the letter of the week, or the whole set from A to Z. Each letter tracing worksheet has a row of the capital letter, a row of the small letter, a row of the pair together and a short word that starts with it, like apple, ball and cat. Every traced row has a blank row under it, so children can try the letter on their own once they've followed the dots.

The letters are large and dotted on 4-line handwriting paper, with a dashed midline and a line for tails, which suits preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade. Two alphabet sheets at the end review all 26 capitals or all 26 small letters on one page. Every sheet is a free PDF on Letter paper with no sign-up.

Letter Tracing FAQ

Are these letter tracing worksheets free?

Yes. All 28 sheets, one for each letter A to Z and two alphabet reviews, are free printable PDFs with no sign-up. Print as many copies as your class or family needs.

What age are letter tracing worksheets for?

Most children start tracing letters at 3 or 4, in preschool, and keep practicing through kindergarten. The large letters and 4-line paper also suit 1st graders who still reverse a letter or two.

Should children learn capital or small letters first?

Many preschools start with capitals, which are made of straight lines and simple curves, then move to small letters in kindergarten, where most reading text uses them. Each sheet here has both, so you can focus on one row or practice the pair.

Can I make letter tracing worksheets with other letters or in cursive?

Yes. The handwriting worksheet generator traces any letters, words or sentences in five sizes and three letter styles, and the cursive worksheet generator does the same in joined US school cursive.

Can I make a sheet with my child's name?

Yes. The name tracing worksheet generator fills a page with any name. Paste a class list and every student gets a page of their own.
